Petrol price Down by Rs 1.15, Diesel up 50 paise

State-run fuel retailers on Thursday cut petrol price by Rs 1.15 a litre, excluding local taxes, the second reduction in a month that would help spread some cheer ahead of Diwali.

As expected, the retailers also raised diesel price by 50 paise a liter in line with the government's January decision to go for small revisions every month till the gap with the market rate is wiped out.

The new prices will be effective from the intervening midnight of Thursday and Friday. For petrol, the actual cut at pump level will be Rs 1.38 from Rs 71.02 in Delhi due to incremental reduction in VAT. Similarly, it will cost Rs 78.04 a liter in Mumbai against Rs 79.49.

Diesel price in Delhi has been hiked by 56 paise to Rs 53.10 per litre, while it will cost Rs 60.08 in Mumbai, up from Rs 59.46.

This is the 10th hike in diesel price and should have brought the fuel's rate to market level. But the rupee's devaluation widened the gap between government-controlled retail and market prices to Rs 14.50 per litre. After Thursday's hike and the recent hardening of the rupee, the gap is pegged at Rs 9.58.

Petrol rates were last reduced on October 1 by Rs 3.05 per litre, or Rs 3.66 after including VAT in Delhi. This was the first cut since June and came after seven increases aggregating Rs 10.80 per litre, excluding VAT, or Rs 13.06 after including state tax as the rupee depreciated sharply against the dollar.

"Since the last price change, international prices of petrol have declined marginally from about $113 per barrel to about $112. The rupee-dollar exchange rate has appreciated from around Rs 63 to a dollar to around Rs 62. Both these factors have resulted into a reduction in prices of petrol," IndianOil Corporation, the nation's largest fuel retailer, said in a statement.

Besides diesel, oil firms are losing Rs 35.77 per litre on sale of kerosene and Rs 482.50 per 14.2-kg domestic cooking gas cylinder. These are lower than Rs 38.32 and Rs 532.50 loss incurred last month.

At current rates, IOC projected a revenue loss of Rs 71,200 crore on sale of diesel, cooking gas and kerosene for the 2013-14 fiscal. If figures for all the three retailers are taken together, under-recovery would be Rs 135,900 crore.

Muzaffarnagar : 3 killed in fresh communal clashes

Fresh communal clashes broke out in Muzaffarnagar district Wednesday evening as Muslims and Jats from neighbouring villages shot at each other, killing three Muslim youths and wounding several.

In a separate incident in Foghana, about 25 km away, a Hindu woman was killed after unidentified persons attacked her and her husband while they were returning home on a motorcycle. Police sources said they were yet to establish a link between the two incidents.

Sixty-three people, 46 of them Muslim, were killed in the first wave of violence in the region last month. Thousands continue to live in relief camps after fleeing their villages in the aftermath of the clashes.

The Jats belonged to Mohammadpur Raisingh village, which is under the jurisdiction of Bhaurakalan police station, while the victims belonged to Hussainpur village, which is under the jurisdiction of Budhana police station.

Hundreds of angry villagers surrounded the Budhana police station Wednesday evening following the killings and police were trying to defuse the situation late into the night.

Five companies of the Provincial Armed Constabulary and police personnel from neighbouring districts have been rushed to control the situation.

"Rajendra Fauji of Mohammadpur Raisingh village was working in his field when a group of men from the adjacent Hussainpur village attacked him. But he somehow managed to escape and informed residents of his village who rushed to the spot armed with firearms," Uttar Pradesh Additional DG (Law & Order), Mukul Goel, told The Indian Express.

He said residents of Mohammadpur Raisingh village spotted the group from Hussainpur running towards a thicket close to Rajendra's field and they fired at them. "The other group retaliated and both groups fired at each other, killing three Muslims from Hussainpur," he said.

Movie review: Hrithik Roshan's 'Krrish 3'

Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Vivek Oberoi, Kangana Ranaut
Director: Rakesh Roshan
IE Rating: **

'Krrish 3' is a superhero film. It is also a throwback to the creaky family entertainers Bollywood used to make. The hero has special powers, sure, but also a loving daddy, a lovely wifey, an attractive moll and a villain with severe daddy issues. Only a pet poodle or parrot is missing.

Patna blasts suspect's escape

High drama prevailed over reports of the escape and subsequent arrest of a suspect in the serial bomb blasts that rocked Patna on Sunday.

Bihar Police first said Mehar Alam, who was detained by NIA for questioning from Muzaffarpur area a couple of days ago, escaped on Wednesday night from the washroom of a guesthouse where he was putting up.

But NIA officials reportedly contested the police version and said Alam had been cooperating with investigators but did not turn up for questioning on Wednesday as directed.

Human brain may be even more powerful computer than thought

The brain may be an even more powerful computer than before thought — microscopic branches of brain cells that were once thought to basically serve as mere wiring may actually behave as minicomputers, researchers say.

The most powerful computer known is the brain. The human brain possesses about 100 billion neurons with roughly 1 quadrillion — 1 million billion — connections known as synapses wiring these cells together.

Alien world is exactly like ANOTHER EARTH - except for one tiny detail

Four hundred light-years away in the constellation Cygnus there lies a G-type star very like our own Sun. Orbiting it is a world which scientists believe is very similar to Earth in both size and composition.

This faraway world, discovered by the Kepler space telescope and so dubbed Kepler-78b, is not a potential second home for humanity (or alien life along the same general lines as that of Earth). That's because it orbits its sun at a distance of just a million miles, rather than the 93 million that lie between us and Sol. And it's this which has top astro-boffins around the world baffled.

Nokia Lumia 800 survives a three and a half month dive in a lake

A diamond may be forever, but Nokia phones come pretty dang close to matching diamonds in toughness. Case in point, a Swedish man who dropped his phone in a lake three and a half months ago. He recently found his Lumia 800 and the results are pretty typical of Nokia devices that go to hell and back.

Roger Nilsson lost his Nokia Lumia 800 in a lake and was able to recover it. The first Windows Phone handset from Nokia was at the bottom of this lake for 3.5 months until he was able to retrieve it. The condition? Covered in algae. Here’s what Roger say’s happened after recovering the device:

LG Curved Smartphone In Race Against Samsung

South Korea's LG Electronics Inc unveiled a curved smartphone on Monday in a move to catch up bigger rival Samsung Electronics Co.

Curved displays and flexible screens are the new battleground for phone makers as the screens open up possibilities that could eventually transform the high-end smartphone market.

Curved smartphones provide a more comfortable grip than flat-screen models, but the lack of must-have features means they are unlikely to be big consumer hits anytime soon, analysts have said. Manufacturing costs also remain relatively high.

Reason Why BBM For Android Can't Beat WhatsApp Any Time Soon

A well-received ad campaign never defines the success of a product. Similarly, the arrival of BBM on Android and iPhone may have pulled in a large number of users, but the humongous 10 million downloads in 24 hours is not necessarily an indicator that users are content and would continue using the app, that was once a BlackBerry device exclusive.

Director say "Rajjo" is not a vulger film

Vishwas Patil's 'Rajjo' is based on the life of a prostitute, but the director has ensured that no inappropriate dialogues or bold scenes are included in the film.

"I always wanted to make a family film, and you can see this in my film as well, although it is about a prostitute who tries hard to survive. I did not use any abusive language and hot scenes in the film," Patil said in a statement. The director wanted his debut film to be a complete family entertainer.

"My priority was to make a family film rather than a film for a particular age group. I can assure you that you can watch this film with your family," he said. At a time when item numbers seem to be an essential feature of films today, 'Rajjo' has none.

"Music director Uttam Singh decided to swim against the tide and resisted including such songs in the soundtrack of 'Rajjo'," said a source close to the film. Produced by Four Pillars Entertainment, 'Rajjo' stars Kangana Ranaut, Paras Arora, Prakash Raj, Mahesh Manjrekar and Jaya Prada.

No Dilli cop is as daft as to believe that a simple computer with a 4GB ram and 1TB hard disk, along with a graphic card and other essentials will cost Rs 1,19,000.

I don't think a supposed computer genius either, would also believe that anyone, leave alone a Dilli cop, would be so stupid to buy that line of his.

Therein lies the flaw in MICKEY VIRUS; the writing is plain juvenile. In the end, the writer feels the need of explaining each and every scene that preceded the climax. The audience too, is taken to be as daft.

A class IX student of a public school in south Delhi was allegedly gang-raped by three men inside a car parked at a ground near Safdarjung Enclave on Tuesday night, police said.

Ranchi ODI : Rain forces washout in Ranchi

Only one India bowler looked the part in the first three ODIs. And when MS Dhoni handed over the team sheet to his counterpart George Bailey at the JSCA Stadium in Ranchi, the omission of Bhuvneshwar Kumar raised many an eyebrow. That Ishant Sharma would be dropped was, of course, expected.

Nevertheless, it’s another thing that Dhoni sorely missed Bhuvneshwar’s swing after winning the toss in overcast conditions. But Mohammad Shami, his replacement, removed three top-order batsmen within the first eight overs.

It’s a different story that the match was abandoned because heavy rain just five overs into the Indian chase. The hosts were on 27/0 in reply to Australia’s 295 for eight.

Bailey (98, 94 balls, 7x4, 3x6) produced yet another masterful knock and, in the company of Glenn Maxwell (92, 77 balls, 6x4, 5x6) sent the Indians on a leather hunt. Australia all but posted their fourth consecutive 300-plus score in the series. The duo added 153 runs for the fifth wicket in only 22.4 overs before being felled in their nineties.

With their bowlers in the firing line, it was just the start India would have dreamt of as the decision to blood Mohammad Shami and Jaydev Unadkat provided instant results. Feeling the heat after failing to defend a 300-plus total at Mohali, the India bowlers came out firing on all

Apple vs Nokia vs Microsoft

Can man (and woman) live by tablet alone?

Given this week's hoopla, you'd think we all had $500 burning a hole in our pockets waiting to buy a new tablet (even though, they're pretty much like the old tablets). Apple got most of the attention, but Microsoft officially launched new versions of its Surface tablets and former phone star Nokia launched its first Windows tablet.
Nolia Lumia 2520
If you told me a couple of years ago that millions of people would pony up $500, $700, even $800 for a small flat panel computing device that lets you surf the Net and take pictures, I would have said you were a clueless billionaire. The standing rule in consumer electronics for decades has been that you wouldn't -- couldn't -- have a successful product until you hit the magical $200 price point. Indian troops returned fire, but one Indian guard was killed and six were injured by a shell fired at the Arnia post in the Jammu region, he said.

The fact that India's fortune in the ongoing series hinges on their bowling is not lost on anybody. But on the eve of the fourth ODI at the JSCA International Stadium Complex, there was nothing to suggest that a change of personnel was being mulled.
