Meet the 3 Indian-American Billionaires who made it to America’s Rich List

Forbes has released a rich list of the 400 wealthiest in the US, where expectedly prominent names like Bill Gates ($72 billion), Warren Buffet ($58.5 billion), and Larry Ellison ($41 billion) are leading the pack.
However, our eyes are fixated on the three Indian-Americans who have secured plum positions in this coveted line-up, interestingly though, they’ve all witnessed a drop in rankings from last year.

What’s more, two names have fallen off the list completely (Kavitark Ram Shriram and Manoj Bhargava).
Here’s the lowdown on the billionaires that are still thriving

Bharat Desai

Chairman and Co-founder, Syntel

Net worth: $2.2 billion

Desai may have witnessed a drop in his position from last year (252 in 2013 v/s 239 in 2012), but the Florida outsourcer continues to lead the Indian-American line-up in America’s 400 Richest.

Romesh Wadhwani

Founder and Chairman of the Symphony Technology Group

Net worth: $2.1 billion

Wadhwani made his fortune via his private equity firm that strategically backed up software and IT companies.

And although the entrepreneur did a 10 rank drop (260 in 2013 v/s 250 in 2012), he has dedicated 80% of his wealth towards philanthropy by signing the Bill Gates and Warren Buffett Giving Pledge, most of which is directed to benefit the country of his origin.

Vinod Khosla

Venture Capitalist

Net worth: $1.5 billion

Losing ground, going from 328 in 2012 to 352 in 2013 is billionaire Vinod Khosla, who is notoriously popular for his bold statements on venture capitalists—ie, “90 percent of VCs add zero value and 70 to 80 percent add negative value to startups in advising them.”

Much like Wadhwani, Khosla is also part of the Gates and Buffet Pledge, and is a strong advocate of the use of cleaner technologies.
